019: The Power of Self-Education

Aug 27, 2021

I am a firm believer in the power of self-education. I think it is one of the few things that has the potential to truly steer life's course in the direction of one's choosing. I find nothing more inspiring than real stories of people who set themselves a goal and then took action to study hard and earn the required knowledge to achieve that goal. Sometimes I even have the honour of playing a tiny part in such a story.

Today's post features a message that I received from a person I admire within the health and fitness space. His name is Monty Simmons, and I interviewed him last year for one of my podcast minisodes. You can watch our conversation by clicking here. Monty's words deeply touched me, but please understand that I only offered guidance. The hard work was entirely Monty's own.

I have written permission from Monty to share his message with you. I hope you find it as motivating as I did.

"Hi Dan, I just wanted to thank you for pointing me in the right direction just over a year ago.

I have been studying the fundamentals of classical mechanics since you recommended me some books on Instagram. I didn't go to university and haven't had the luxury of formal higher education, so I have primarily taught myself.

Thanks to some years of hard work, particularly the previous year studying biomechanics, I have managed to get into an MSc in Applied Sports and Exercise Biomechanics at St.Mary's University in Twickenham.

I have dreamed of getting to university to do a Masters, and you have been a part of what has helped me realise that dream. So, thank you!

Hopefully, I can say it in person someday.

Have a great week.
